Feed the Hungry of the World
Our GVC team participated in FreeRice to earn food
for hungry people of the world.
|
At FreeRice.com, we played a vocabulary game. While helping to feed the hungry, we also improved our word power. For each correct answer, 20 grains of rice were donated to the World Food Program to distribute to people in need. 20 grains of rice might not sound like a lot, but we kept track of how much we earned for this worthwhile project. Here are our results:

FreeRice has thousands of words at different levels of difficulty. There are words for people just learning English and words that challenge the most scholarly professors. In between are thousands of words for students, business people, homemakers, doctors, retired people… everyone!
FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level of vocabulary. It starts by giving you words at different levels of difficulty. Based on how you do, it assigns you to an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a word wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three words in a row right, you go to a harder level. This one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the “outer fringe” of your vocabulary, where learning takes place. There are 50 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get above level 48. Join us to improve your vocabulary and help feed the hungry people of the world! |

Think about all those kids who don't have food. You should help out and donate food. Most people don't have the kind of money we do. Some people try to find food in the trash,we try to help the people in need! Donating food to the shelter is very kind because you're giving food and helping those who don't have home. One day my mom, sister and dad and I went to Taco Bell to go get some food. So when we went my mom told my dad that we had too many tacos, and we should give some to the homeless guy across the street. So then my dad thought about it, and we ended up giving the guy two tacos with sour cream and a extra large Mountain Dew. So after all instead of him getting money he got something better..... food. One day I was starving because I forgot my lunch. Then someone....ummm I think it was L.....well anyway they got me food and I was happy.
Muir sixth graders read and did assignments in order to earn animals to give to hungry people through the Read to Feed program. The students met their goal, and sponsors donated money to the Heifer Foundation, which has distributed chickens, ducks, geese, goats, cows, llamas, water buffalos and even bees to families who can then start businesses in their countries. Their gift of geese went to a needy family.
